Food Review: Dominick’s Pizza, Bear DE

Another in the line of periodic and rare food reviews.

Dominick’s Pizza is a hole-in-the-wall place near People’s Plaza in Bear, Delaware.  Located next to a somewhat scary-looking gas station, it isn’t the kind of place most people find themselves drawn to.  My wife and I have talked about eating there off and on over the last couple of years, and we finally got around to trying it.  We ordered delivery both times, and the driver was the nicest and most pleasant delivery person I’ve encountered since Joe from Joe’s NY Pizza in Florida, 12 years ago.  She smiled and behaved more like a waitress than a UPS driver, something that startled me and stood out, in a very good way.

In our two forays, we tried their pizza, calzone, and stromboli.  The pizza, a New York style with pepperoni, was excellent, the cheese having just the right level of grease sitting on it and in a good ratio of sauce to cheese to crust.  The sauce was good and complemented everything else.  I am not a crust eater traditionally, generally setting it aside for the dogs, but this time I ate all the crust as well.  I thought I detected an olive oil or similar flavor on it, which made it tastier than the normal doughy backstop for toppings like most pizzas.

The calzone, ricotta, mozzarella, and pepperoni, was excellent.  The sauce that came on the side, the same as in the pizza and stromboli, was obviously homemade and incredibly good, with small chunks of tomatoes and just the right level of sweetness.  There was a little bit too much extra dough on the edges without fillings, but the crust was delicious dipped in the sauce so I can’t complain that much.

The stromboli, pepperoni and cheese, was excellent as well.  The sauce was a little watery as it leaked from the sides of the cut stromboli, another testament to its homemade nature.  It was excellent the next day too.

Update: Since my original review, the Dominick’s in Bear closed, then reopened again. Their cheesesteaks are the best delivered cheesesteaks I’ve ever had, and are actually my 2nd favorite cheesesteak place in Delaware (Malin’s Deli is #1). The gyros are good, their wings are excellent, and the hot wing pizza is an awesome choice. I haven’t had a bad food item yet.

Bottom line: forget the Papa John’s, the Domino’s, Pat’s, or whatever you normally get.  If you like New York style pizza and can get Dominick’s delivered to you, do it, without hesitation.  It’s worth it.
