The Shooting

Note:  This is long, it is rambling, at times incoherent, and should probably not be read by anyone.

After learning the details behind the Giffords shooting this past weekend – kinda strange that we call it the Giffords shooting, when she survived, when all those others did not; why not the John Roll shooting [and it goes to show that just a few days after the shooting, it took me ten minutes to actually find an article that references his name and not Giffords] – I was as disgusted as anyone, and probably a bit more than the average American.  I was disgusted that this is the world we live in, that any douchebag with a mental problem can get his hands on a gun and kill people with no real danger to himself, and that it took no time for people on either side of the political “spectrum” (hard to call anything that consists of two points a spectrum, honestly) to start pointing fingers at each other.  The ongoing debate over it all disgusts me.  Humans disgust me.

As I’ve said a few times, I have complex political views, like any normal right-thinking person should.  I agree with the Left on some things.  I agree with the Right on others.  I think most people do, but our climate fosters an Us and Them philosophy which forces a lot of people to feel like they need to pick a choice, Red or Blue.  I say, Fuck That, but that’s neither here nor there.  As it happens, both sides are the biggest bunch of narcissistic douchebags who need to frame every event into a What This Means For The Next Election.  The Left decries the violence-filled speech the Right uses.  The Right points to a book the killer owned.  It’s Their Fault.

Here’s how I see it.  Every fucking part of us, Our Society, is at fault in a way.  We allow and foster this idea that our fellow countrymen, our neighbors, our friends, are also The Enemy, The Other Party.  Both sides use the most melodramatic language possible to describe how Horrible the other ideology is.  Both are right.  Having a set, carved-in-stone ideology is really fucking stupid, since issues are way to complex to be boiled down to Yes or No.  And it seems by default that if Party A says Yes, then Party B must say No.  But this goes beyond mere politics.  We seem like we’ve become a nation of Haters.  We’re racists, we’re bigots, only it isn’t good to say our prejudices aloud, but that doesn’t mean we abandon them.  We hate whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Middle-easterners, Jews, Catholics, Muslims, Christians, atheists, gays, transexuals, poor people, rich people, city slickers, country bumpkins, suburban zombies, coffee drinkers, tea drinkers, boozehounds, tea-totallers, the Dallas Cowboys and their fans (which is only right and normal, carry on), and each and every person that disagrees with us.  It’s what we do.  We seemingly can’t help it.  We foster a constant feeling of Us vs. Them.  Well, occasionally, an unhinged asshole will do something about it.  We, as a society, encourage it.

Of course, on the flip side, people who do this shit are crazy.  I don’t mean in an insanity defense kind of way, which is the biggest bit of legal horseshit ever.  If there is a person who honestly doesn’t believe it’s wrong to kill someone else, then do we really want that kind of person around anyway?  Fuck that.  They aren’t going to be “rehabilitated” into realizing, hey, killing people is bad!  Again, fuck that.  I am a big supporter of the death penalty.  I think in cases like this, we know who did it, he knows we know, there isn’t a question of Forensics or anything like that.  Boom, dead, no appeal.  What the fuck could this waste of a human being appeal to or for?  Why feed this asshole for another day?  “Oh, he wants to be a martyr, we can’t let him be that” – uh, fuck that noise.  Let him be a dead motherfucker.  The asshole that killed Robert Kennedy is still alive.  To what fucking purpose or end?  He should have been dead decades ago.  I don’t think every murder should invoke the death penalty, but I think there are definitely cases where it’s automatically warranted.  You are absolutely allowed to disagree with me on this, and I won’t even shoot you over the difference.  We can just agree not to talk about it.

So I support the death penalty.  Definitely.  I think the whole argument about whether it’s right or nice or just is irrelevant.  I don’t want to live in a society around homicidal insane people.  Sue me.  So I agree with the Right on that one.  Now let me piss them off.  I also support gun control.  I think the notion that if every person had a gun, we wouldn’t have to worry about gun violence anymore, is the most ridiculously stupid and asinine argument I’ve ever heard.  “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”  OK, but guns make it a fucking lot easier to do it, now doesn’t it.  And let’s ignore those deaths from accidental discharges.  “If we outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns.”  Perfect.  It’ll certainly make it a fuck of a lot easier to pick out who the bad guy is then, wouldn’t it?  The guy with the handgun is him.  Easy.

To be technical, I think handguns should be much more tightly controlled than they are.  I can see and understand the argument for rifle and shotguns and hunting weapons.  I don’t have a problem with them, since they aren’t easily concealable and have a use besides shooting human beings.  Handguns are designed for one thing and one thing only; killing people.  That’s what they are designed for and nothing else.  But it makes people feel like badasses to carry one, and they’re all fun to shoot, so trying to restrict access to them is UNAMURRICUN.  Like a bunch of Glock-toting douchebags will every successfully Overthrow A Tyrannical Government like they all claim to be doing it for.

As an aside, why Glock?  My mother-in-law sounded like the biggest dumbass in the world as she was squawking about wanting a Glock.  Glock Glock Glock.  I asked what kind of gun she wanted.  A Glock.  No, what power, what ammunition, what else?  A Glock.  She didn’t know anything else but the word Glock.  She now carries one.  She’s all proud of it.  Let me tell you something.  If an armed intruder ever threatened my life, and that half-blind ditzy woman pulled out her Glock, I’d be a dead motherfucker.  So would everyone in a five-block radius, including her.  Knowing she has a gun makes me feel LESS SAFE.  Ditto for every cowboy wanna-be who thinks they’re Deadeye Fucking Dick ready to stop a bank robber, like they’re a goddamn nine-year-old playing with sticks in their back yard.  If the world’s best, most-highly trained soldiers, people who live and breathe gunfire scenarios, still panic and make bad decisions and kill friendlies, then what the fuck does anyone think is going to happen when every dumbass motherfucker carrying a gun decides to play Wyatt Earp all at once?  It’ll be the Shootout of the Retards Pretending to Be at the OK Corral.  It’s the Right’s wet-dream scenario of a perfect society, which shows they’re just as fucking stupid as the Left is.

So here it is, days later.  I am still fucking disgusted by myself and everyone else.  I don’t see that changing anytime soon.  Land of the Brave, Home of the Free, Domicile of the Stupid Assholes Who Think They Know Everything and Have All The Answers.  Including me.

  1. It’s amazing but we love to hear those sound bites and get enraged. Even that whatever her name is chef made some harmless comments about treating her husband like a king and every feminist has come screaming she is setting women back 100 years… whatever. No one wants to actually listen, no one wants to go online to see the extended interview (not the distilled one we read). No one wants to take the time to THINK.

We do love hating… I know even I do it. It is tough not to. I’ve been on team “Us” and on team “Them”… they both sucked… so now I am a gleeful fence straddling middle roader. (AKA sell out to my far-left friends and far-right friends.) So, I’ve got some room on the fence straddling train if you’re interested!

  2. Thanks for this post. I apparently agree with what you are saying. I have been talking about this subject a lot lately with my father so may this will get him to see my point of view. Fingers crossed!
